Dextroamphetamine is used as part of a treatment program to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults and children. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. It is also used as an athletic performance and cognitive enhancer, and recreationally as an aphrodisiac and euphoriant. Dextroamphetamine is in a class of medications called central nervous system stimulants. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. It can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems. This medication is also used to treat a certain sleeping disorder (narcolepsy) to help you stay awake during the day. The amphetamine molecule exists as two enantiomers, levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It should not be used to treat tiredness or to hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder.

Dextroamphetamine comes as a liquid, tablet, and an extended-release (long-acting) capsule to take by mouth. The tablet is usually taken 2 to 3 times daily with or without food. The first dose is usually taken when you wake up in the morning. Take dextroamphetamine at around the same time(s) every day. Do not take dextroamphetamine in the evening because it may cause difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. If you are taking this tablets, take your first dose as soon as you wake up in the morning, and space your doses by 4 to 6 hours. Take as exactly as directed. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.
