Modafinil is a non-amphetamine central nervous system (CNS) stimulant with wakefulness-promoting properties, used to help you stay awake during work hours if you have a work schedule that keeps you from having a normal sleep routine, narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. Modafinil does not take the place of getting enough sleep. It is a weak inhibitor of dopamine reuptake, which may be its primary clinically important property. This medication does not cure these sleep disorders and may not get rid of all your sleepiness. Modafinil exists as a racemic mixture of S- and R-enantiomers, interaction with the dopamine transporter at the molecular level. For obstructive sleep apnea, take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Continue your other treatment (such as the CPAP machine, mouth device) unless your doctor tells you to stop. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Modafinil is readily absorbed after oral administration. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Take this medication exactly as prescribed to lower the risk of addiction.
